How Social Security Disability Insurance Works
Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) is a program that provides cash benefits for workers who must discontinue working, due to a disability or work condition that prevents the individual from working. These benefits are available to people who have worked in the past and paid Social Security taxes and are now facing a serious health condition or disability that prevents them from working at a job that will enable them to pay for the costs of living.

Requirements for SSDI
In order for an individual to qualify for Social Security Disability, the person must meet two criteria. The first is that the injured person must have worked long enough to qualify for these benefits. In addition, the Social Security Administration must render a decision that the individual is disabled for benefits to be awarded. The SSA has five criteria that must be met, in order for you to receive SSDI benefits.
The criteria for a qualified disability include:
- An inability to work at a level of substantial gainful activity
- A severe medical condition that is expected to last at least 12 months or result in death
- A medical condition that is included on the Social Security Administration’s list of impairments
- The condition must prevent you from doing the work you did previously
- The condition must prevent you from doing any other type of work
